(CNN)-- Spanish midfielder Gavi said he wants to turn the page on the events that followed the final whistle of the 2026 World Cup final, which pitted 'La Roja' against Argentina and ended with the former winning 1-0.

A brawl broke out between the players immediately after the match, and Argentine Leandro Paredes was seen along with his teammate Thiago Almada assaulting Gavi.

Paredes had received a red card as a result, and press reports claim that he and his compatriot Almada are subject to sanctions by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.

In statements reported by EuroSport on Wednesday, Gavi said: 'Honestly, I don't think they should be suspended. I understand that it doesn't set a good example for children, but I also see that there is a side of football that involves some violence.'

The 21-year-old explained: 'Perhaps the most logical action, in my opinion, is to send the player off during the match and leave it at that.'

He added: 'As I said, I think the whole thing falls under the name of football, and the game should remain that way.'
