Argentina lost to Spain 1-0 after extra time in the final held at MetLife Stadium in the United States, finishing as runners-up, as Argentine fans await Scaloni's stance on continuing with the team. Scaloni said during the post-match press conference: 'I will speak with the president of the Argentine Football Association, and I have a fairly clear idea of what I want to do, but I will first complete my contract, and then I will see what I will do.' He added: 'I will honor my contract until December, and then I will think about the next step,' emphasizing that he does not want to rush his decision regarding his future with the team. The Argentine coach explained that he needs to pause and reassess the next phase, saying: 'Honestly, I feel that I need to think, because I don't know if we can achieve something as great as this again. We have to talk, and I am grateful to the president for giving me this opportunity that was a dream for any coach.' He continued: 'We tried until the last moment to give our all, both the coaching staff and the players, and therefore I believe I deserve to give myself enough time to think before making any decision.' Scaloni could not hold back his tears during the press conference as he recalled his journey with the Argentine national team, which began in 2018 when he took over temporarily before being permanently appointed as head coach, leading Argentina to win the 2022 World Cup, then renewing his contract until December 2026. Scaloni emphasized that rebuilding the team would be a major challenge, pointing to the difficulty of replicating the current generation, saying: 'This place is amazing, but continuing requires many things. We need to rebuild and form a new group, and it is very difficult for such a generation to repeat itself, and that hurts me deeply.' He added: 'It is unlikely that such a wonderful group will come together again, and that hurts me deeply,' referring to the generation that achieved many successes in recent years. Scaloni concluded his remarks by thanking his players and the Argentine fans, saying: 'I can only thank this group of players; they were warriors throughout the journey, and they deserve all the appreciation for what they have given.' The Argentine national team had reached the 2026 World Cup final after overcoming Cape Verde, Egypt, and England in the knockout stages, before losing the title to Spain, who decided the match with a goal in extra time.
