Senegalese Federation: National Team Doctor Specialized in Gynecology
Abdoulaye Fall, president of the Senegalese Football Federation, revealed on Monday that the national team's doctor lacked the necessary specialized background to support the team during the 2026 World Cup, as the federation reviews a disappointing tournament campaign. Speaking at a press conference, the federation president said the team doctor was trained as a gynecologist, noting the issue was discovered late and caused player concerns about the level of medical support available. Fall added: 'Based on the reports I received, the players were not sufficiently reassured about receiving care from him.' He continued that the federation sought additional medical expertise to reassure the team. 'We had to find convincing expertise so they would feel at ease, because health comes first,' Fall said. Meanwhile, the Senegalese Association of Sports Medicine rejected the claims in a statement, calling them 'unfounded and defamatory.' The association stated that Abdourahmane Fédior, the national team doctor, holds a specialized diploma in sports medicine and sports biology from the Faculty of Medicine of Cheikh Anta Diop University. It added that he previously headed the physiotherapy department at Fann Hospital and has been the Senegalese team doctor since 2017, accompanying the team in three World Cups and five Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. Senegal lost its first two group matches against France and Norway, and squandered a 2-0 lead with five minutes left in its match against Belgium in the Round of 32, eventually losing 2-3 after extra time.
