Since 1992.. Unprecedented event in World Cup semi-finals
The current edition of the 2026 World Cup was not without surprises and excitement, but in its decisive stages, it ended with a scene reflecting the balance of power in world football, as the top teams imposed their presence in the semi-finals.
For the first time in the history of the FIFA World Ranking, the top four teams in the world have qualified for the World Cup semi-finals. After Argentina's hard-fought qualification to the last four with a 3-1 extra-time win over Switzerland, a historic scene was completed that had never been achieved since the launch of the world ranking in 1992.
According to Argentine network TYC, since the adoption of the FIFA ranking, which evaluates teams based on their results throughout the year, the list of World Cup semi-finalists has never included the top four teams in the world ranking, as in the 2026 edition.
France tops the current world ranking, followed by Argentina, then Spain, and then England.
Although Argentina started the tournament at the top of the ranking, France seized the top spot during the ongoing World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
France will face Spain in the first semi-final on Tuesday at the Dallas stadium, while Argentina will meet England on Wednesday in Atlanta.
The two winners advance to the final scheduled for July 19 at the New York/New Jersey stadium.
