Solbakken: Match is a battle between Haaland and Kane
Ståle Solbakken, head coach of the Norwegian national football team, confirmed that the clash between his striker Erling Haaland and English goal-scorer Harry Kane will play a major role in deciding the World Cup quarter-final on Sunday in Miami. Haaland has scored seven goals in his first four matches in a major tournament and led Norway to the quarter-finals for the first time since returning to the World Cup after a 28-year absence. Kane, the Bayern Munich star, is just one goal behind the Manchester City striker at the top of the tournament's scoring chart after raising his World Cup tally to 14 goals, and led England to the quarter-finals for the third consecutive time. Solbakken said in a press conference on Friday: 'I think it's Norway vs England, but it's no secret that the two players are the keys to the first win for both teams, and they make the difference.' The German Thomas Tuchel was hired by the English Football Association to lead a talented generation of players to the title after a series of narrow failures in major tournaments under Gareth Southgate, who lost two consecutive European Championship finals. In contrast, Norway is playing its first major tournament in 26 years and has exceeded expectations, especially with its surprise 2-1 victory over Brazil thanks to two late goals by Haaland in the round of 16. Solbakken added: 'Every match has been the most important for Norwegian football, especially in the knockout stages, so this is the third time it is the most crucial match.' The former Wolverhampton coach continued: 'I feel the players are calm but competitive. I think the pressure on England is greater than on us, but we also put pressure on ourselves. When the match starts, I don't think the players think much about it when it's 11 vs 11.' The match in South Florida will be affected by extreme heat and humidity, kicking off at 5 pm local time. Miami is currently under a heat advisory from the US National Weather Service, with heat index values exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. The Norwegian coach, who has been training in Miami for the past three days, commented: 'We trained very lightly. We didn't do much hard work. We focused on tactical aspects but at a low intensity and without long training sessions. So everything is about being in the best condition possible.' He added: 'There is high humidity, but both countries are accustomed to similar conditions.' Solbakken began his press conference by talking about English football legend Kevin Keegan, one of the icons of English football, and expressed his sincere wishes for his recovery from cancer. Keegan, the former England captain and manager, announced last month that he is suffering from stage four cancer, which Solbakken described as the reason for what he called the most frustrating moment in World Cup history. He added: 'Everyone who follows English football in Norway has a favorite team or player, and that makes Sunday's match a bit special... There was only one match broadcast on TV, and everyone had a team they followed closely... I used to support Liverpool, but Keegan was my favorite player. So I tell him to keep fighting.' Norway's admiration for Brazilian football did not prevent them from eliminating the five-time champions in the round of 16, and England cannot expect any leniency from Solbakken's players.
