Spain vs France match records highest viewership in Germany for a match without the 'Mannschaft'

The World Cup continues to attract German interest despite the early exit of the German national football team, as the semifinal match between Spain and France, held yesterday Tuesday, drew the highest television viewership for a match in the tournament not involving the German team.

The German TV ratings and visual content consumption measurement company AGF reported on Wednesday that the average number of viewers for the match, in which Spain beat France 2-0, was 12.688 million, giving public broadcaster ZDF a market share of 53.1%.

The other semifinal match takes place later on Wednesday, with Argentina facing England. The final will be held in New Jersey on Sunday.

The most-watched match in the tournament held in North America was Germany's 7-1 thrashing of Curaçao in their opening game, with an average of 23.427 million viewers and a market share of 70.2%.

The German team exited the tournament after playing four matches, being eliminated in the round of 32.

All World Cup matches are also broadcast on the digital streaming platform Magenta TV, which does not disclose its viewership numbers.
