Test results: Was Courtois seriously injured?
Belgian Thibaut Courtois underwent medical tests on Monday morning at the Valdebebas sports city to assess the severity of the injury that forced him to leave the World Cup quarter-final match against Spain.
According to Spanish newspaper Marca, the result was very reassuring after the tests ruled out any serious injury, ultimately concluding that it was just a false alarm.
The Belgian goalkeeper suffered the injury last Friday in Los Angeles after making several outstanding saves that kept Belgium's hopes alive, before falling to the pitch due to muscle pain in his leg, with the score tied at 1-1, and he asked to be substituted 20 minutes before the end of the match.
Sen Lammens replaced Courtois, and then conceded a goal that gave Spain the qualification ticket, while the scenes of Courtois leaving the pitch in tears increased the concern, both because of his obvious signs of pain and because the injury occurred in the same area he had suffered from several months earlier.
Those fears were not unfounded, as Courtois suffered a muscle injury to the rectus femoris muscle in March that kept him out for several weeks during the crucial phase of the season and deprived him of important matches in the Champions League.
For this reason, his latest injury to the same leg raised fears of a new setback that would have affected the start of his next season, but the diagnosis issued on Monday completely dispelled that hypothesis.
After receiving the green light from the medical staff, Courtois will resume his vacation after a long season and his participation in the World Cup, and will return to Real Madrid training in late July, according to the progressive schedule for the return of international players, without this situation affecting his return date or José Mourinho's plans for the goalkeeper position.
