The Quarterfinal Curse Haunts the Swiss for 92 Years
The Swiss national football team repeated its quarterfinal exit from the World Cup for the fourth time on Sunday, losing 1-3 to Argentina, after failing to advance past this stage for 92 years. In this edition, Switzerland equaled its previous best achievements in World Cup history: reaching the quarterfinals in 1934, 1938, and in 1954 on home soil. The Swiss team relies on the country's diverse immigrant communities, featuring players of Kosovar, Turkish, Spanish, Congolese, Cameroonian, and other origins. The team qualified for the World Cup by topping its group and reached North America after losing only one of 42 matches in World Cup qualifying. On its way to the quarterfinals, Switzerland defeated Bosnia and Canada, one of the three host nations, in the group stage before overcoming Algeria and Colombia in the knockout rounds. Throughout the tournament, Swiss coach Murat Yakin's lineup blended experienced internationals with the younger generation. Captain Granit Xhaka holds the record as the all-time most capped player for Switzerland after a decade and a half of service with the national team. The team's backbone consisted of players from top European leagues, including goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, defender Manuel Akanji, midfielder Remo Freuler, striker Breel Embolo, and winger Zeki Amdouni.
