(CNN)-- Argentinian star Lionel Messi said that the match between his national team and Spain in the 2026 World Cup final will be "special."

Messi predicted that the final match, scheduled to be held at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, will be "very close," as he indicated that "the scales are balanced" between the two teams.

In statements quoted by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) website, Lionel Messi said: "Spain, they are a wonderful team, with outstanding players, they are playing excellent football."

He added: "I know the Spanish national team well, and they have a style of play that they have developed over the years. I also know the players; I have played against many of them and I follow them closely. Several players on the team play for Barcelona, which is a club dear to my heart, and I still keep up with its news."

The 39-year-old continued: "The World Cup final match will be special, and I certainly expect it to be very close. The scales are balanced."

He added: "Everything I have experienced with this group since I returned to participate in the 2019 Copa America has been amazing, beyond anything I could have imagined."

He continued: "I have enjoyed every moment, not only the successes and titles we have won, but also sharing daily life with them and competing alongside them. It has been a truly wonderful journey, and we have also brought a lot of joy to the fans. I am very happy."

The World Cup final between "the Tango" and "the Matador" will be the third for Lionel Messi in his history of participation in the world's biggest tournament.
