Belgian rider Remco Evenepoel, Olympic champion, achieved a resounding victory on Tuesday in the individual time trial of 26.1 km in the 16th stage of the 113th Tour de France, cutting valuable seconds from the gap with Slovenian leader Tadej Pogačar in the general classification. The 26-year-old Evenepoel completed the 16th stage course along the shores of Lake Geneva 28 seconds faster than defending champion Pogačar, who finished second. In contrast, all other riders finished more than a minute behind, while Danish rider Mattias Skjelmose finished third, 1 minute and 4 seconds behind. This performance by the world and Olympic champion in time trials, achieved on Belgian National Day, helped reduce the gap with four-time Tour de France winner Pogačar to 4 minutes and 32 seconds in the general classification. Evenepoel said: 'It's amazing, it was a very beautiful race, and there were a lot of fans on the side of the road.' He added: 'All my family members from both sides are here, and my parents came just today. My wife is also here with her parents and siblings.' He continued: 'And winning on the Belgian National Day is very special. I read this morning that it's been a long time since Belgium has had a win on this national day, so I'm proud to be the one to achieve that.' This is Evenepoel's second consecutive stage win, after he won the mountainous 15th stage on Sunday. It is also his fourth Tour de France stage win overall, and his third in time trials.
