US President Donald Trump will attend the 2026 World Cup final between Argentina and Spain on Sunday evening at MetLife Stadium.

In a pre-recorded interview with journalist Jenny Taft on Fox, Trump did not explicitly reveal his choice regarding cheering for Spain or Argentina.

USA TODAY published Trump's statements from the interview, where he affirmed that it is difficult for him to bet against Lionel Messi.

Trump said: "I thought a lot about this. I knew this question would be asked. I don't like to take sides, even though politically it doesn't matter much. The President of Argentina is a friend of mine and has done a great job. But I say it's hard to bet against Messi."

He added: "I won't favor any team. I just think it's hard to bet against Messi. He's a great player."

Trump also described Messi as "one of the greatest players" to ever play football, placing him in the same status as Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo.

The US President said: "He's certainly one of the greatest players. I get this information from my son Barron, he's a big soccer fan. But there are also a number of amazing players involved here. However, I've always admired Cristiano Ronaldo, and I've always admired Messi."
