Urgent Request to FIFA Before France vs Spain Match
The mayor of Nice, France, Eric Ciotti, has requested the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) to organize a minute of silence before the 2026 World Cup semifinal match between France and Spain, scheduled for Tuesday, July 14, in honor of the victims of the terrorist attack that occurred on the same date 10 years ago on the Promenade des Anglais, killing 86 people.
Ciotti sent an official letter to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, asking for this symbolic tribute on the tenth anniversary of the tragedy that shook France and the world, considering that such a gesture would carry deep human significance.
In his letter to Infantino, the mayor of Nice stated that organizing a minute of silence before the match "would show the solidarity of the wider football family with the victims of terrorism and their loved ones," stressing the symbolic importance of this step coinciding with the painful anniversary.
Ciotti added that the minute of silence would be met "with deep emotion by the families of the victims, survivors, and all the French people," recalling "the values of brotherhood and unity embodied by football," in reference to the role that sport can play in expressing human solidarity in the face of terrorism.
The Nice terrorist attack that occurred on July 14, 2016, is one of the deadliest attacks in modern French history, where a terrorist drove a heavy truck into crowds celebrating French National Day on the famous Promenade des Anglais, killing 86 people and injuring hundreds.
