Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong will be sidelined from Barcelona for several weeks due to a tear in the medial collateral ligament of his right knee, as announced by the Spanish league champions on Thursday.

Barcelona wrote in a statement published on social media on Thursday: 'The tests carried out on Frenkie de Jong have confirmed a tear in the medial collateral ligament of his right knee.'

The Catalan club explained that the 29-year-old player 'will continue his treatment under medical supervision in the coming weeks according to the evolution of his condition.' Frenkie de Jong explained on Instagram, in response to the many speculations about his health, that he injured his knee during his participation in the World Cup with the Netherlands national team. The Dutchman clarified: 'After the initial tests, the doctors (with the Dutch national team) told me the injury was minor and would not worsen if I continued playing.' However, the tests carried out by Barcelona's medical staff upon his return from vacation 'revealed that the injury was more serious than initially expected,' as de Jong confirmed, adding that no surgical intervention is needed at this stage.
