The Spanish national team duo, Gavi and Fabián Ruiz, received an exceptional welcome in their hometown of Los Palacios y Villafranca, after contributing to Spain's 2026 World Cup title, but the tribute had an unusual twist.

The Spanish national team won the World Cup for the second time in its history, after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final match held in New York last Sunday.

According to the Spanish newspaper Marca, the city authorities made a point of giving each player a quantity of tomatoes equal to his weight, in a local tradition the region is known for. Gavi received 68.5 kilograms of tomatoes, while Fabián Ruiz got 84.5 kilograms.

The tribute did not stop there, as the municipality of Los Palacios y Villafranca announced that it would name the city's football fields after Gavi and Fabián Ruiz, in addition to beginning the construction of a monument in honor of the duo, with the participation of veteran Spanish star Jesús Navas, who attended the celebration ceremony.

Gavi stated on the sidelines of the tribute that he sees no need to punish the Argentine national team players who assaulted him after the final whistle of the World Cup final, although the International Football Federation (FIFA) has opened an investigation into the incident.
