Argentina's defeat to Spain by a goal to nil in the 2026 World Cup final has sparked a wave of controversy in the Argentine street, escalating to demands for the final match to be replayed.

According to the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, Argentine fans launched an online campaign demanding the World Cup final be replayed, which has so far garnered over 61,500 signatures.

Behind this initiative is Argentine supporter Gisela Sánchez, who started a petition on Change.org questioning the performance of Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić and calling on FIFA to review the officiating decisions made during the match held last Sunday in New York.

The petition's author claims that the officiating decisions directly affected the course of the match, alleging irregularities that warrant review, without providing any documented evidence to support her accusation.

Despite the public momentum the campaign has achieved, it lacks any legal basis to force FIFA to change the match result, as no official match can be replayed except under exceptional circumstances stipulated in sports regulations, or by a decision from the competent bodies within the international federation.

This initiative joins a series of digital protests seen during the 2026 World Cup, with another French campaign collecting over 82,000 signatures demanding a replay of the semifinal against Spain, due to a controversial play preceding the penalty kick caused by Lamine Yamal.

Spain were crowned World Cup champions after defeating Argentina 1-0 with a goal scored by Ferran Torres in extra time.

Despite the bitterness of the defeat, tens of thousands of Argentine fans took to the streets across the country after the final whistle to express their support and gratitude to the national team for reaching the final and coming close to winning the title for the second consecutive time.
