In the historical Banat region of western Romania, Politehnica Timișoara was founded in 1921 as the sports arm of the famous Polytechnic University in Timișoara. This entity was established by prominent professor and engineer Traian Lalescu, who served as the first president of the university and laid the foundation for a football team representing the students and academic spirit of the city. From its first records, the club has been linked to educational identity, adopting purple and white as its colors and visual identity that distinguished it throughout its long journey on domestic and continental fields. On the ground of Dan Păltinișanu Stadium, which has a capacity of over 32,000 spectators and opened in 1963, the team carved its football identity and carried the name of local legend Dan Păltinișanu, who wore the club's shirt in its golden era. The team is known among its fans by the nicknames 'The Purple and White' or 'The Students'. Throughout its history, the club has achieved accomplishments including winning the Romanian Cup twice in 1958 and 1980, finishing as runner-up in the Romanian Liga I in the 2008–2009 and 2010–2011 seasons, and participating in European competitions such as the UEFA Cup and UEFA Champions League, creating historic matches against major clubs like Celtic of Scotland and Atlético Madrid of Spain. Over the decades, the team has been led by a selection of prominent Romanian and foreign coaches, such as Emerich Jenei and Titus Ozon, who shaped the team's identity, Gheorghe Hagi who oversaw technical management in the millennium period, Darian Coliu and Marian Iancu. The team featured local and international stars who etched their names in football memory, led by all-time top scorer Ion Timofte, solid defender Dan Păltinișanu, goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon who later moved to the English Premier League, striker Gheorghe Puchino, and skilled playmaker Gabriel Torje. As part of its preparations for the new sports season and within the ongoing external training camp in Austria, Politehnica Timișoara will play a strong friendly match against Saudi club Al Riyadh. This match serves as a key station for the technical staff of both teams to test the physical and technical readiness of the players and implement tactical plans amid the Austrian camp atmosphere, which focuses on raising fitness levels and harmonizing new and old elements, in preparation for returning to official competitions and achieving results that meet the ambitions of both clubs in the upcoming fixtures.
