Wimbledon: Karolina joins Coco in semifinals
Czech Karolina Muchova advanced to the Wimbledon semifinals after defeating Japan's Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, 7-6, 6-4 in a physically demanding match with varied shots on Tuesday, setting up a clash with American Coco Gauff. Before the match, the head-to-head record was tied at three wins each, and both players performed at a high level despite the high heat on Court No. 1. The 29-year-old Czech, seeking her first Grand Slam title, proved to be more consistent on Court No. 1 in the extremely hot weather, committing 21 unforced errors to Osaka's 42, while each hit 24 winners. The match drew cheers from the crowd despite a nervous start that saw breaks in four consecutive games. The 28-year-old Osaka, seeded 14th, had defeated top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round, but could not sustain that level, committing two double faults and two aces in the ninth game of the second set, and missed a volley to lose her serve. Muchova will now face seventh-seeded American Coco Gauff, who has won six of their seven meetings and earlier defeated compatriot Jessica Pegula tonight.
