(CNN)--Cristiano Ronaldo and his Portugal teammates secured an exciting 2-1 victory over Croatia at BMO Field on Friday night in the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup.
Ronaldo (41) scored Portugal's first goal from the penalty spot in the 68th minute.
After the final whistle, despite the joy of advancing to the round of 16, Ronaldo was overcome with sadness for a moment.
The Al-Nassr player wore a jersey bearing the number 21, the shirt of the late Portuguese player Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident on July 3, 2025, as he honored him on the anniversary of his death.
At that moment, Cristiano Ronaldo appeared deeply moved, as the Portuguese fans in the stands reacted.
Ronaldo had played with Jota in several international matches, and together they scored more than five goals for their national team.
