Yakin: They punished us because of a rule I don't understand
Murat Yakin, the head coach of the Swiss national football team, described the rule that the referee used to send off Breel Embolo as 'unacceptable,' which led to Argentina scoring two goals in extra time, ending his team's journey in the 2026 World Cup with a 3-1 victory in their quarterfinal match, early Sunday. Embolo received a second yellow card for diving in the 72nd minute, five minutes after his teammate Dan Ndoye had equalized, and while Switzerland was posing the greatest threat. The referee initially showed a yellow card to Leandro Paredes, Argentina's midfielder, before a lengthy VAR review confirmed that Embolo had not been fouled. Yakin said: 'There was absolutely no reason to show a yellow card. It was a harmless situation. He should have let play continue, and we were punished because of an unacceptable rule. I don't understand it. Honestly, they intervened unnecessarily, and what happened is very painful. It's a rule that has nothing to do with football, and it ruined our match against Argentina. We have to accept it, but losing in this way is painful.' Switzerland held on until the 112th minute when Julián Álvarez unleashed a brilliant long-range shot into the top corner, before Lautaro Martínez added Argentina's third goal nine minutes later. This defeat ended Switzerland's participation in the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 1954. Yakin emphasized that the red card changed the course of the match, which his team had begun to control after recovering from Alexis Mac Allister's opening goal in the 10th minute. He added: 'I would like to praise the entire team because we came back from a one-goal deficit against the world champion. The momentum was in our favor, we were dominating the match, controlling its flow, and then we were punished because of an unacceptable rule. I don't understand that. My players are the true heroes.'
