Zakho club has sealed the biggest deal in Iraqi football league history by signing Uzbek striker Sherzod Temirov, last season's top scorer, for approximately $4.2 million, according to its president who announced it to AFP on Wednesday. Jiya Othman, president of Zakho club, said: 'Temirov's contract extends three seasons with Zakho and amounts to 5.5 billion Iraqi dinars, about $4.2 million, the highest player deal in the history of the Iraqi league competition.' He added: 'The player moved from Erbil club to form the striking attacking force for Zakho club in the next three seasons.' Zakho's management introduced their new player, aged 27, to the media on Wednesday, making him one of the most prominent professional acquisitions. No professional player has ever reached the value of Temirov's deal since Iraqi league clubs were allowed to complete professional deals for foreign players starting from the 2009-2010 season. Othman explained that the reason for contracting with Temirov is his winning of the Iraqi league top scorer title last season, his high technical and spiritual capabilities, and his contribution to Erbil obtaining third place last season. Temirov scored 28 goals to top the league scorers, eight goals ahead of Syrian Alaa al-Din al-Dali, Mosul's striker, and nine ahead of Peter Kurkis, Dohuk's striker. However, Italian Fabio Cannavaro, coach of the Uzbek national team, excluded the striker from the national team list for the 2026 World Cup, currently underway in North America.
