Apple has officially released the public beta versions of its new operating systems for 2027, giving users a chance to try out their features before the final launch expected in September. The new systems include iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, and watchOS 27.

Leading the new features is the upgraded version of Siri, which transforms the voice assistant into an intelligent AI-powered assistant; it can conduct natural conversations, understand follow-up questions, analyze screen content, and perform multi-step tasks within apps.

The new version of Siri is available in the public beta versions for devices that support the Apple Intelligence platform, but it currently works only in English and will not be available in European Union countries at the initial launch.

Extensive improvements in Apple's AI features

The update also includes new features within Apple's AI platform, Apple Intelligence, notably more advanced image editing tools such as Spatial Reframing to adjust image composition after capture, and Extend to expand image boundaries, in addition to an enhanced version of the unwanted object removal tool, and improved quality of images generated by the Image Playground app with support for realistic styles.

Faster performance in iOS 27

Apple confirmed that iOS 27 brings noticeable performance improvements; apps open up to 30% faster compared to previous versions, while new photos appear in the Photos app up to 70% faster, and file transfer speeds via AirDrop increase by up to 80%.

The company also added new features in the Safari browser, including automatic tab organization into groups, and a 'Notify Me' feature to monitor price changes or product restocks on websites.

The Passwords app can now detect weak passwords and update them automatically, while the Shortcuts app allows creating new automations using commands written in natural language.

Apple responded to criticism of the new Liquid Glass design in its systems and added improvements to increase element clarity, as well as a slider allowing users to control the level of visual effect of the design.

New features for Apple Watch

The watchOS 27 for Apple Watch also gets the new Siri features, allowing use of the intelligent assistant during workouts or navigation.

The update includes a dynamic app grid that shows the most used apps, a new single-tap gesture to interact with Smart Stack items, while retaining the double-tap gesture for scrolling. Apple also improved the Cycle Tracking app to include premenopause and menopause stages, and the Workout Buddy app received enhancements including more detailed training data display and the ability to work without needing an iPhone nearby.

macOS 27 and iPadOS 27

Apple focused in macOS 27 Golden Gate on boosting productivity by integrating the new Siri assistant into Spotlight search, with the ability to analyze screen content and assist with writing, along with interface design improvements such as unified toolbars and updated window and sidebar styles.

As for iPadOS 27, it includes most of the features of iOS 27, with added better support for Visual Intelligence using the Apple Pencil, allowing users to select any element on the screen to learn more about it.

Apple improved file transfer speeds between iPads and external SSDs, confirming performance is up to five times faster compared to the previous version.

Warning before installation

Apple noted that these versions are still beta and may contain bugs or affect battery life and system stability, so it advises users seeking a more stable experience to wait until the second or third public beta before installing updates, or wait longer for the final release.
