Kingdom Announces Success of Global Initiative to Regulate E-waste Management in Partnership with the International Telecommunication Union
The Kingdom announced the success of its global initiative to develop e-waste management regulations, implemented in partnership with the International Telecommunication Union in Paraguay, Rwanda, and Zambia, aiming to enhance international efforts in digital sustainability and apply circular economy practices.
The organizing bodies added that the announcement was made on the sidelines of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in Geneva, with the participation of over 190 countries. The initiative aimed to accelerate the transition to green practices and provide innovative solutions to reduce e-waste for a sustainable digital future.
Initiative Outcomes and Broad International Engagement
The information indicated that the initiative resulted in the development of three national regulatory frameworks for circular economy management in the beneficiary countries, along with the publication of a specialized guide documenting best practices and regulatory policies in e-waste management, as well as studies to estimate waste costs and identify potential fees on electronic devices.
In the same context, the initiative saw the participation of over 270 entities and more than 480 specialists from the public and private sectors across various countries, reflecting the growing international interest in digital sustainability issues.
The Kingdom's Leading Role in the Telecommunications Sector
It is noteworthy that the Kingdom, since joining the International Telecommunication Union in 1949, continues to support the Union and the international community in shaping the future of the telecommunications sector globally, promoting digital regulatory innovation, adopting emerging technologies, building human capacity, and transferring knowledge in the fields of artificial intelligence and the circular economy.
