How long will we keep chasing, eagerly anticipating, and splurging thousands of riyals on the latest communication devices like smartphones, only to get a new gadget that isn't much different from the ones we already have? The fever of upgrading and replacing has become a phenomenon in our world, as many are keen to swap their devices for newer ones, paying hefty sums, all for the sake of showing off, keeping up with trends, and owning whatever is new, regardless of the cost.

Some argue that their eagerness to acquire the latest devices stems from the new programs and applications they offer. But if we consider the actual benefit derived from these apps, we find it limited for many users. Often, their use is confined to watching humorous clips or sharing jokes, yielding little real value. Undoubtedly, global tech companies strive to continuously develop their devices and launch new versions, which affects market dynamics and encourages some consumers to constantly upgrade, even though the differences between versions may be negligible for everyday needs.

This obsession has driven some individuals to borrow money or take on additional financial burdens at the expense of their families' needs, believing that owning the latest release is a sign of keeping up with progress.

We notice that many of those keen on acquiring the latest devices are middle-income earners, whereas it would be better for them to allocate part of those funds toward benefits for themselves and their families.

It is also observed that some new releases may require different accessories or upgrades to certain components, prompting consumers to buy additional peripherals, which contributes to increased spending over time.

Sometimes I smile when I encounter someone asking about a new device months before it hits the market, as if they can't wait, even though the device they already have still serves its purpose efficiently.

So how long will we keep buying, replacing, and chasing every new thing, as if we have no other concerns? And how long will we allow unconsidered consumption habits to drain part of our financial resources? When will we become more mindful in dealing with technology, using it to serve our real needs instead of letting it dictate our decisions?

Many questions swirl in my mind whenever I see the amount of spending on constant upgrades and acquiring new things, even if they have no real impact on our lives or add value worth the cost.
