The International Center for Research and Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (ICAIRE), in collaboration with UNESCO and the International Research Centre on Artificial Intelligence (IRCAI), has announced the opening of applications for the research workshop accompanying the 2026 Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, hosted by the Kingdom in Riyadh from September 14 to 17, 2026. This step aims to enhance international scientific participation and enrich the global dialogue on the ethics and governance of artificial intelligence.

The center clarified that applications are available through two main tracks: the first for submitting scientific research abstracts, and the second for submitting discussion session proposals, with participation from researchers, academics, practitioners, policymakers, and students from around the world.

This call comes as the fifth anniversary of the adoption of UNESCO's Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence approaches, which is the only global normative instrument agreed upon in this field.

The center pointed out that scientific contributions can address, for example but not limited to, several themes, most notably: the practical application of the UNESCO Recommendation across different countries and contexts, including its tools such as the Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM) and the Ethical Impact Assessment (EIA); the role of international and multilateral cooperation and partnerships in building consistent and inclusive AI governance; mechanisms for operationalizing ethical values and principles in the design, development, deployment, and governance of AI systems; the alignment of policy areas in the Recommendation with modern technological changes in the fields of environment, culture, education, health, communication, and information; in addition to future visions and foresight approaches for the future of ethical AI governance.

The center noted that all submissions will undergo a peer-review process, while the best research papers will have the opportunity to be published in a special issue of the Journal of AI for Sustainable Development (JAISD). The center set July 18, 2026 as the deadline for receiving abstracts and session proposals. The research workshop will be held on September 14, 2026 as part of the Global Forum on the Ethics of AI, and the accepted proceedings and abstracts will be published on October 31, 2026.
