WhatsApp Tests New Feature to Remind Users of Friends' Birthdays
WhatsApp is testing a new feature aimed at making it easier to remember contacts' birthdays, reviving one of the most popular habits from Facebook's early days when birthday greetings filled users' pages.
The new feature was spotted in the beta version of the app for Android available through the Google Play Store, but it is still in early development stages, and Meta has not yet announced an official release date for all users.
The feature relies on a dedicated section that displays a list of upcoming birthdays for contacts, with an in-app notification sent when a birthday arrives, giving users a quick reminder to send greetings directly via WhatsApp.
This feature is linked to another system WhatsApp is testing for age verification, which aims to verify that users meet the legally required minimum age, collecting date of birth during the verification process. Accordingly, WhatsApp will not be able to display birthday reminders for contacts who have not entered their birth data.
This move comes as Meta continues to expand WhatsApp's features, including a username feature instead of relying on phone numbers, which has sparked discussions about data privacy within the app.
The current beta version does not provide settings allowing users to control whether to show the birth year or birthday data, raising privacy concerns. However, it is not ruled out that WhatsApp may add options to control this data before the official launch, especially since the feature is still under development.
So far, testing of the birthday reminders feature is limited to Android phones, with more details expected to be revealed as the broader rollout approaches.
