A new report indicates that OpenAI is preparing to launch a smart speaker, designed to act as a personal assistant powered by artificial intelligence, interacting with users in a natural way similar to conversations with ChatGPT.

According to a Bloomberg report, the device will be easy to carry between rooms, allowing it to be used in the kitchen to receive cooking instructions, then moved to the living room or bedroom to continue interaction. It will also support controlling smart home devices and playing audio content.

The report noted that the device will not have a screen, but will include moving mechanical parts that give it a more lively appearance, in an attempt to create a sense that it is an entity interacting with the user, not just a speaker executing commands.

The device will run a more advanced version of the GPT-Live voice model, which powers the new voice conversation feature in ChatGPT, allowing it to listen and speak simultaneously, quickly process new information, and adapt to the flow of conversation naturally.

OpenAI plans to equip the device with a camera and multiple sensors, aiming to understand the user's surrounding environment and provide more personalized responses based on context.

In 2025, OpenAI acquired the startup io, founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive, in a deal worth $6.5 billion, to help design the new device.

According to the report, the company aims to launch the device in 2027, but the timeline may be affected by an ongoing legal dispute with Apple.

Apple recently filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and two of its former employees, accusing them of stealing trade secrets and confidential files related to unannounced devices, and also accused OpenAI's subsidiary io of participating in those violations.

Apple claims that former employees Zhang Liu and Tang Yu Tan downloaded dozens of confidential files containing technical specifications and data on yet-to-be-released products, and also accused OpenAI of attempting to obtain additional confidential information during job interviews.

Apple added that OpenAI has so far recruited more than 400 of its former employees, including Paul Meade, the former head of Vision Pro development, who now leads the new hardware division at OpenAI.
