Anthropic has announced the availability of its smart personal assistant Claude Cowork via the web and smartphones for the first time, after it was previously limited to the company's desktop application. The move aims to facilitate its use in accomplishing and managing office tasks from anywhere.

Claude Cowork enables the execution of multi-step tasks on behalf of the user, such as organizing files, searching topics, preparing reports, and working across connected applications, without the need to manually follow each step.

The new expansion gives users the ability to start and manage tasks via a web browser or iPhone and Android phones, making the service more convenient for workers outside the office or on the go, with tasks continuing to run in the background.

The company clarified that the desktop application for macOS and Windows will still provide the most integrated experience, as it retains direct access to local files, while the web and mobile versions focus on task delegation, progress tracking, and result review.

Anthropic has made updates to the service's backend infrastructure; Claude Cowork sessions now run by default in the cloud instead of relying on the computer remaining on. This allows users to start a task on their computer, then continue it via their phone or web browser without interruption, with tasks continuing to execute even when the laptop is closed.

The company added that scheduled tasks will work even if none of the user's devices are connected to the internet, and Claude will send notifications to the phone when a task needs review or approval. Meanwhile, desktop application users can still switch between cloud processing and local processing according to their preferences.

The feature is set to roll out first to Max plan subscribers, with availability for subscribers of other paid plans in the coming weeks. Concurrent with the launch of Claude Cowork on web and mobile, Anthropic announced an extension of the doubled service usage limits until August 5, to give users more time to experience its capabilities.
