France recorded 5,764 deaths during the severe heatwave that hit the country between June 17 and July 2, 2026, representing the highest increase in mortality rates since the historic heatwave of 2003, according to the French National Public Health Agency.

The agency revealed that half of these deaths occurred in just three days, between June 25 and 27, reflecting the intensity and rapid escalation of the heatwave.

The agency stated that the early and prolonged heatwave affected nearly 98.5% of the country's population and extended to 92 departments, during a sensitive period coinciding with school and professional activities.

These figures come after a difficult year, as France recorded 5,700 deaths related to extreme heat throughout the summer of 2025, according to final figures from the National Health Authority.

As a third heatwave hits the country in mid-July, French authorities have urged citizens to be cautious, warning of dry, hot winds expected to intensify by the end of the week, accompanied by record-high temperatures and widespread vegetation dryness.
