Chinese authorities evacuated more than 600,000 people today in Zhejiang and Fujian provinces as Typhoon Bavi approaches the coast of eastern China, where it is expected to make landfall near Wenzhou in the early hours of Sunday.

State media reported that the evacuations included more than half a million people in Zhejiang province, in addition to more than 100,000 in Fujian province, as part of precautionary measures to deal with the typhoon, which still poses a danger due to the heavy rains it brings, despite its gradual weakening. In Taiwan, authorities evacuated more than 14,000 people from mountainous areas, canceled hundreds of flights, and most cities and counties declared a public holiday, while no deaths have been reported so far in Taiwan or Japan due to the typhoon.

In the Philippines, heavy rains associated with the typhoon's effects and the southwest monsoon have contributed to the deaths of 17 people, according to authorities.
