US authorities have recorded at least 19 deaths in New Jersey suspected to be linked to a severe heat wave that lasted several days. New Jersey Health Commissioner Raynard Washington said that the deaths suspected to be associated with extreme heat began to be recorded last Thursday, and most occurred in the central and northern regions of New Jersey, explaining that many of the victims were found inside homes lacking air conditioning, while others were found outside their homes, in the streets, or inside parked cars. Meanwhile, New Jersey Governor Miki Sherrill described the current heat wave as the most severe the state has seen in more than 14 years, warning of its effects on various age groups, adding that the risks of high heat are not limited to the elderly or those with chronic diseases, but extend to all residents.

The heat wave coincided with violent storms that hit several areas in the United States, causing power outages for about one million homes and commercial establishments.
