The latest tally of forest fires in Algeria recorded 115 fires across 21 provinces, causing significant material losses, requiring intervention from the relevant authorities: civil protection and forest protection teams, along with the People's National Army, civil society, and residents of affected areas.

Algeria has been witnessing daily fires in various regions of the country, especially in the eastern provinces, due to rising temperatures.

According to civil protection services, Monday alone saw 115 fires, mainly in forests, jungles, scrublands, agricultural crops, and palm groves, prompting a full alert from protection and forest teams, but also intervention from units of the People's National Army, which deployed various equipment including firefighting aircraft to help control the flames in record time.

Civil society organizations, activists, and residents of affected areas also contributed to extinguishing the fires, helping to stop the flames and prevent them from reaching populated areas to avoid human casualties.

In this regard, meteorologist Rabah Kadi explained the record high temperatures since the start of the season, saying: "The reasons are the concentration of the heat dome, also known as the strong high pressure over Algeria and most of North Africa, following the dominance of an extremely hot air mass in the lower layers of the atmosphere, which caused exceptionally high temperatures for more than ten consecutive days, exceeding 49°C in the shade, the highest since summer."

The speaker added in a statement to Al Arabiya.net: "The heat dome forms due to the descent of air from the upper layer towards the Earth's surface, where it undergoes heating under pressure, a dynamic process that leads to an increase in air temperature and a decrease in humidity, enhancing atmospheric stability, limiting cloud formation, and allowing sunlight to heat the Earth's surface, thus intensifying the heat wave noticeably."

The specialist added: "We expect temperatures to return to moderate levels starting next Saturday, July 26, which will allow the formation of northwesterly currents that will lower temperatures back to seasonal levels."
