The Indian embassy in Tehran announced on Friday that a liquefied petroleum gas tanker flying the flag of Mozambique was attacked in Iranian territorial waters.

The embassy said in a statement on the U.S. platform 'X' that the tanker 'Desha' with 28 Indian sailors on board was attacked in Iranian territorial waters earlier today.

It added that it had contacted the relevant authorities and that all Indian crew members are safe and unharmed.

Early Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that any damage to ships or cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz will be compensated from frozen Iranian funds under U.S. control.

For about two weeks, the United States has been conducting raids in Iran, while Tehran responds with missile and drone attacks on military bases, facilities and sites it says are linked to Washington in regional countries.

The escalation comes despite Washington and Tehran signing a memorandum of understanding last June that included a cessation of fighting and the start of negotiations to reach a broader agreement to end the war that Israel and the United States began on February 28 last year.

But Trump announced on July 8 the end of the ceasefire, following attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz that Washington accused Tehran of being behind.

Washington demands that Tehran stop attacking ships and ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran insists on subjecting the transit of ships to a mechanism it regulates through the waterway overlooking its coasts, raising fears of a disruption of oil and gas exports from the region.
