US President Donald Trump reiterated on Friday that the ceasefire with Iran is over, but indicated that talks with it continue.

Trump wrote on Truth Social: 'Iran asked us to continue talks, and we agreed, but the United States made it unequivocally clear to them that the ceasefire is over.'

Wednesday and Thursday witnessed a violent exchange of fire between Washington and Tehran, after Trump's statement that the ceasefire was 'over,' raising doubts about the survival of the memorandum of understanding between the two sides, which was supposed to pave the way for completely ending the war.

But earlier on Friday, a US official confirmed that talks between the United States and Iran on a permanent peace agreement are ongoing, despite the military escalation on Wednesday and Thursday.

Israeli reports talk about Iran's attempt to assassinate Trump

According to Bloomberg News, citing the official whose identity was not disclosed, 'the United States remains committed to finding a diplomatic solution with Iran.'

The official described the ongoing discussions as 'technical talks aimed at reaching a permanent peace agreement by around mid-August.'

The United States and Iran are seeking to resolve complex issues, most notably Tehran's nuclear program, where the US seeks to impose a temporary freeze on uranium enrichment and give up its current stockpile of near-weapons-grade uranium.

Previous reports indicated efforts by Pakistan, Qatar, and other mediators in the region to ease tensions between the US and Iran and revive negotiations between the two sides.
