Summary

Trump's visit to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, his third in 13 months, drew close scrutiny. Over the past year, the White House had to clarify several health conditions of the president after photos sometimes showed swelling in the ankles, bruises on the hands, and spots on the neck.

President Donald Trump's doctor said in a memo released by the White House on Friday that the US president remains in excellent health, based on results of an examination conducted last week that indicated the 79-year-old president has "mild swelling in the lower leg and benign bruises" on the hands.

Dr. Sean Barbabella said in a memo written Tuesday and released late Friday evening that "President Trump remains in excellent health, demonstrating strong performance in heart, lung, and neurological functions as well as general physical fitness," adding that Trump is "fully qualified to carry out the duties of commander-in-chief and head of state."

Barbabella noted in the memo that there was "mild swelling in Trump's lower leg, improved compared to last year," and persistent bruises on the hands, which he described as "common," "benign," and "consistent with mild soft tissue inflammation from frequent handshakes while on aspirin for cardiovascular disease prevention."

The memo did not address the reason for the dermatological treatment on his neck that the president underwent in March, and did not mention him undergoing an additional MRI, as happened in October.

Trump, who will turn 80 in June and is the oldest person to assume the presidency, has consistently portrayed himself as more active and fit than his Democratic predecessor Joe Biden, who left office last year at age 82 amid doubts about his fitness for the position.
