MADRID: Emergency services said a 13-year-old died and two people were injured when a fountain partially collapsed in western Spain early Monday, casting a pall over mass celebrations of the country’s second-ever soccer World Cup victory.

The World Cup triumph had ignited widespread celebrations, drawing crowds to public spaces across Spain.

The collapse happened just after midnight in Ciudad Rodrigo, a walled medieval town of about 12,000 residents in Salamanca province, close to the Portuguese border.

Hundreds of people had assembled at the Arbol Gordo fountain in the city center when the monument's upper section came loose and hit several people, according to regional emergency services.

In a ‌statement, Ciudad Rodrigo’s town hall expressed condolences for ⁠the ⁠victim.

“The entire city feels this loss and accompanies the minor’s friends and family in their grief ... What should have been a celebration of the Spanish national team’s World Cup victory has ​turned into ​a tragedy,” it said.

The accident has cast a shadow over the World Cup celebrations in Ciudad Rodrigo and beyond. Local authorities expressed condolences to the victim's family, emphasizing that the festive mood had been shattered. The collapse underscores the importance of structural safety in public monuments, especially during large gatherings.
