Guterres expresses concern over renewed military confrontations in the Gulf and calls for restraint
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed concern over the renewal of military confrontations in the Gulf region, warning that escalation could undermine the diplomatic path.
Guterres said he called on all parties to exercise restraint, de-escalate tensions, and abide by international law, including the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, and respect for freedom of navigation.
The Secretary-General added that he urged the United States and Iran to urgently resume negotiations and address outstanding issues through diplomatic channels.
The U.S. military announced late Wednesday that it had launched new strikes on Iran aimed at keeping the vital Strait of Hormuz open for navigation, hours after President Donald Trump declared that the interim agreement to end the war with Iran had "ended."
The U.S. Central Command said in a post on X, announcing a new round of strikes Wednesday, that "under the direction of the Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Central Command forces began conducting additional strikes on Iran to further degrade its ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz."
In turn, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced today that it targeted two U.S. military bases in Kuwait and two in Bahrain, confirming that its operations are in response to recent U.S. attacks on targets inside Iran.
The Revolutionary Guard said in a statement that the Iranian response "will not stop at this point," warning that its forces will expand the scope of their operations to include other U.S. bases in the region if the United States repeats its attacks.
