Death toll from Venezuela earthquakes exceeds 4,700
The death toll from the two devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 has exceeded 4,700, while the number of injuries has reached approximately 17,000, according to official figures published on Monday.
According to the latest figures published by the President of the National Assembly (Parliament) Jorge Rodríguez on Telegram, the disaster has resulted in at least 4,734 deaths and 16,740 injuries.
He added that most of the injured have left hospitals after receiving treatment.
Two earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, 39 seconds apart, struck the capital Caracas and the neighboring state of La Guaira in particular, turning entire high-rise residential complexes into piles of rubble.
For its part, the United Nations estimates that around 50,000 people are still missing since the two earthquakes, which caused the collapse of hundreds of buildings.
