Brazil Supreme Court Rules to Maintain Former President Bolsonaro's House Arrest
The Brazilian Supreme Court ruled to maintain former President Jair Bolsonaro under house arrest on humanitarian grounds, instead of completing his 27-year prison sentence.
Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes explained that the decision was based on Bolsonaro's health condition and advanced age, noting that house arrest is the most suitable option to preserve his health, without setting a date for review of the decision.
The judge also banned Bolsonaro from possessing any firearms and ordered the seizure of any weapons in his home.
Bolsonaro was sentenced in September to 27 years in prison after being convicted of conspiring to remain in power following his loss in the 2022 presidential election to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Brazilian authorities had transferred Bolsonaro from prison to house arrest in March for health reasons, after he was hospitalized with pneumonia.
