An Israeli opinion poll on Sunday showed the opposition 'Yashar' party led by former Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot leading Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party.

According to the poll, published by the official Israel Broadcasting Authority, Yashar obtained 24 seats in the Knesset, compared to 23 for Likud, while the 'Together' list led by former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett obtained 15 seats.

On the question of the most suitable person for prime minister, Eisenkot outperformed Netanyahu with 41 percent versus 37 percent.

The bloc of opposition parties to Netanyahu obtained 68 seats, compared to 52 for the bloc supporting him.

Gaining the confidence of at least 61 deputies is required to form a government.

The poll results coincided with the Israeli government's announcement that the Knesset elections will be held on their scheduled date on October 27, without advancing the date.

The Broadcasting Authority said the announcement came during a session of the Knesset committee on Sunday.

The 'Cantor' institute conducted the poll for the Broadcasting Authority, including 551 participants aged 18 and above, with a margin of error of 4.2 percent.
