Burnham rules out calling early elections in Britain

Andy Burnham, the frontrunner to become Prime Minister of Britain, ruled out on Friday calling an early general election, pledging to adhere to the Labour Party's election manifesto and to continue supporting Ukraine.
Burnham, currently the sole candidate to succeed Keir Starmer, who resigned as party leader and head of government last month, is expected to take over the Labour Party (center-left) and form a government later this month.
During an "Ask Me Anything" session on Reddit, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester answered questions on various issues, ranging from electoral reform to foreign policy, as reported by Agence France-Presse.
Regarding the war in Ukraine, Burnham said he would provide Kyiv with the same level of support that Starmer had, also noting his desire to continue efforts to strengthen relations with the European Union.
When asked about the possibility of an immediate general election, he replied: "No," confirming that he would work according to the "2024 election manifesto" that led his party to a landslide victory that year, noting that the next election is not scheduled before 2029.
On the Reddit session, Burnham also indicated that he still supports reforming the British voting system based on the "first-past-the-post" principle, which has historically benefited the country's two main parties. He said: "I am a strong supporter of electoral reform, because I believe it will help move towards a more collaborative politics, less focused on scoring political points and more concerned with solving problems," adding: "I will seek to persuade my party to include a commitment to electoral reform in the next election manifesto."
