French President: Situation Tense as Wildfires Sweep Country
Firefighters in France continued to battle several widespread wildfires along the Atlantic coast and in the south of the country.
French President Emmanuel Macron said: "European partners are sending planes and helicopters to help extinguish the fires." He added: "The situation remains very tense in the face of the fires sweeping across the country, especially in Gironde," referring to the region near Bordeaux.
Macron stated that France has requested the activation of the European Union's Civil Protection Mechanism and will receive support from Croatia, Portugal, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. The most dangerous fires were raging near Bordeaux, a popular tourist destination, where some 20,000 people have been evacuated from campsites and resorts since yesterday, and the region is expected to see temperatures reaching 39 degrees Celsius today.
