Zoos around the world are seeking to protect their animals from the heat as temperatures record unprecedented levels this summer.
A giraffe in Italy enjoys fruit and ice cubes hanging from a pole, a bear in Kosovo eats a frozen watermelon, a cow in Boston enjoys a frozen meal, while bears in Germany enjoy ice balls... It's not just humans; animals around the world are trying to beat the heat wave that has brought high temperatures this summer.
Dr. Malu Cheli, vice president of animal care at Franklin Park Zoo, said that animals get 'frozen meals containing their favorite fruit or meat, or blood popsicles if they are predators, or frozen fish, anything that helps cool them down if they are suffering from the heat.'
In Italy, frozen meals are also popular among all animals at the Rome Zoo. Yitzhak Yadid, secretary general of the zoo, said that using frozen food aims 'first to help them cool down, and second to pass the time, just as humans do when they buy ice cream in extremely hot weather.'
