Officials and local media reported that flash floods and landslides caused by seasonal rains killed at least 19 people in India on Sunday, as authorities launched rescue operations in affected areas.

Eight people died in Nagaland state in the northeast, bordering Burma, while 11 others died in the Indian part of Kashmir.

Winyi Konyak, a judge of Mon district in Nagaland, told AFP: 'We have retrieved four bodies out of eight, and rescue operations are ongoing.' He added that at least 15 other people were injured.

Omar Abdullah, the chief minister of the region, expressed in a statement 'deep sorrow over the severe flash floods in the Rajouri area' of the region. He added in a statement from his office that the floods 'caused extensive damage to public and private property, including the bus station, and disrupted the lives of countless people.' The army said its personnel and emergency services workers in the region rescued 11 people, including five children, in Rajouri. The India Meteorological Department warned Sunday of possible 'very heavy rainfall' in the region over the next two days.
