Iran's Foreign Ministry summoned Britain's ambassador to Tehran on Wednesday, after the UK classified the Revolutionary Guards under British law to 'counter state threats,' warning that the step 'will not go unanswered.'

This action came a day after Britain summoned Iran's charge d'affaires, Ali Nassim Far, in London over what the British government described as Iran's role in directing proxy groups to carry out attacks across Europe in recent months.

Britain had on Monday classified the Revolutionary Guards and a group linked to it as a 'security threat,' under new powers aimed at preventing other countries from using proxies in activities such as surveillance and sabotage.

Iran's Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that 'following the unjustified measure taken by the British government to include the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in the law to counter state threats, Hugo Shorter, the British ambassador to Tehran, was summoned today, Wednesday.'

The ministry stressed that the decision would be met with 'a similar and decisive Iranian response.'

On Monday, the British government revealed plans to ban the Iranian Revolutionary Guards as a threat to national security, along with an Iran-linked group accused of carrying out a series of attacks on Jewish interests.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that under the bill to be presented to Parliament this week, 'anyone proven to support or assist these groups will face a penalty of up to 14 years in prison.'

The list of banned groups will also include the 'Volunteer Corps' affiliated with Russian military intelligence, and the 'Islamic Righteous Movement,' an Iran-linked group that claimed responsibility for attacks targeting Jewish interests in London.

The new legislation grants the British government powers similar to those used in banning organizations, allowing it to classify agents of foreign states deemed a threat to UK national security.
