Iraqi Minister of Water Resources, Muthanna al-Tamimi, said that the water reserves in Iraq have risen to 34 billion cubic meters after being only 5 billion cubic meters.

Al-Tamimi added that "the water situation at the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026 was very difficult, as Iraq only had 5 billion cubic meters of water, the lowest level of water reserves Iraq has witnessed since 1933," noting that "the reserves rose thanks to heavy rainfall, reaching 34 billion cubic meters."

He explained that "this level requires everyone to maintain it, as it is still less than half of what it was in 2021, when water reserves reached 60 billion cubic meters," stressing "the importance of everyone's cooperation to maintain good levels of water reserves to ensure the success of the agricultural season," according to the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

He said that "the ministry is seriously following up on the implementation of the agricultural plan through field visits to the governorates, examining problems and addressing them in cooperation with local administrations, including governors, members of provincial councils, and members of parliament, to avoid many obstacles."

He pointed out that "there is a fundamental issue regarding the water quotas allocated to each governorate, which must be adhered to, with the need for coordination between governors and members of provincial councils to ensure each governorate receives its water entitlement."

He continued: "We did not start implementing the agricultural plan for this season until after coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture, as several meetings were held driven by a great concern for the success of the agricultural season, especially since farmers were deprived of many summer seasons in past years. Therefore, we were keen to provide what contributes to improving their standard of living and achieving abundant national production of crops included in the agricultural plan for this season," calling on farmers to "adhere to water quotas, expand the use of modern irrigation techniques, and commit to the elements of success for the agricultural season."
