Bamako - Agencies:

A Tuareg-led rebel group said it attacked a town in northern Mali where government and Russian paramilitary forces are stationed, while residents in two other areas in northern and central Mali reported hearing gunfire and explosions. The attack is the latest challenge for the military government in the Sahel nation, after rebels launched prominent attacks in April targeting the capital Bamako's airport, killing the defense minister and seizing several military bases in the north. Mohamed El Maouloud Ramadan, spokesman for the Azawad Liberation Front, said fighters from the front attacked the town of Anifis in the Kidal region of the north. Government and Russian forces had deployed in Anifis following the April attacks, during which the Azawad Liberation Front and an al-Qaeda affiliate in the region took control of Kidal city. In the central town of Gao, a local official said gunfire and rockets targeted an army camp since before dawn Saturday, adding that it was not immediately clear who was responsible.
