Washington Extends Work Permits for Hundreds of Thousands of Immigrants
On Friday, the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump extended work permits for hundreds of thousands of immigrants with temporary protected status from Haiti and six other countries, hours before they were set to expire.
Permits for Haitian nationals will remain valid until July 24.
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced that permits for Haitian nationals will remain valid until July 24, while permits for nationals of Ethiopia, Syria, Somalia, Yemen, South Sudan, and Myanmar will expire within a week.
The decision comes after a Supreme Court ruling last month that allowed the administration to end temporary protected status for some nationalities, a status that allows them to stay and work legally in the United States when their home countries are affected by disasters or conflicts. The ruling raised widespread concerns among human rights advocates about the potential loss of protection from deportation and work permits for hundreds of thousands.
Trade unions also warned that canceling the permits could cause disruption in workplaces and affect key economic sectors, as the Trump administration continues to implement a strict immigration policy that includes high fees on some visa applications and expanded scrutiny of applicants' social media accounts, citing the need to enhance internal security and protect job opportunities for American citizens.
