Prominent U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham has died at the age of 71 after a brief and sudden illness.
The Republican senator's office said in a statement posted on his official account on X on Sunday: 'U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham died on Saturday evening, July 11, after a sudden and brief illness', adding that 'his family asks for privacy during this difficult time'.
Graham was a U.S. Senator from South Carolina and chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, and was considered one of the closest allies of U.S. President Donald Trump.

President Trump mourned his prominent ally, describing him as 'one of the greatest people' he had ever known.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform: 'Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest people I have ever known, has died! He was hardworking and a true American patriot. He will be greatly missed by everyone.'
It is worth noting that Graham was previously one of the harshest critics of President Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential primaries, but later became one of his closest and most loyal allies in the Senate.
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster described him as 'irreplaceable' and wrote on X: 'He was one of the strongest advocates for South Carolina and the United States, and a loyal and steadfast friend.'

His father, Florence James Graham, and mother, Millie Graham, owned a restaurant, a pool hall, and a liquor store. During his upbringing, Graham worked in the family-owned pool hall.
He was educated at the University of South Carolina, earning a bachelor's degree in 1977 from the School of Law, and a Juris Doctor in 1981.
He joined the U.S. Air Force as a military lawyer in 1982, then the National Guard, and later the Air Force Reserve, retiring with the rank of colonel in 2015.
Graham was unmarried and resided in Seneca, South Carolina.

Graham began his political career in the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1992, and in 1994, he became the first Republican elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from South Carolina in decades.
In 2002, he was elected to the Senate, succeeding veteran Senator Strom Thurmond, and held his seat since then until his death, becoming one of the most prominent figures in foreign policy and defense within the U.S. Congress.
Graham was known for his hardline stances on national security issues, as he was one of the strongest advocates for increasing military spending, expanding the U.S. role abroad, and supporting U.S. military interventions. He also adopted tough positions towards Russia, Iran, and China.
His website stated that Graham 'consistently sought to achieve results in the war on terror that protect our long-term national security interests.'
In recent years, Graham served as chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and was also a member of the Appropriations Committee, the Judiciary Committee, and the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works.
In recent years, he was one of the most vocal Republican supporters of Ukraine and led bipartisan efforts to tighten sanctions on Moscow.
Graham was also known for his strong support for Israel, his continuous calls to tighten sanctions on Iran, and his endorsement of expanding economic sanctions against U.S. adversaries.
Despite being initially classified as a moderate Republican, Graham became one of the party's most prominent 'hawks' and remained an influential player in shaping the Republican Party and Congress until his final days.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu mourned him, describing him as 'one of Israel's greatest friends.'
Netanyahu said in a statement from his office: 'Lindsey understood that the security of Israel and the United States are inseparable... Israel has lost one of its greatest friends, the United States has lost a great patriot, and I have lost a dear friend.'
For his part, Israeli President Isaac Herzog said the news of Graham's death left him in a state of 'shock,' describing the senator as 'a model of moral clarity and a true leader of the U.S.-Israel partnership.' He added: 'We will never forget how he stood by the people of Israel in our most difficult moments. We will be forever grateful for his sense of justice, truth, and loyalty.'
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz also mourned him, saying: 'I am deeply saddened by the death of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, who stood by Israel in its most difficult moments.'
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar mourned him, saying: 'Senator Graham was one of the greatest friends of Israel and the Jewish people in the United States and around the world... His support for Israel and its security was steadfast and strong. The State of Israel has lost a great friend. Israel will not forget you, my friend.'
Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and a large number of former officials, party leaders, and politicians also mourned him.
Graham was one of Israel's strongest supporters during its latest war on Gaza, which broke out on October 7, 2023, and 'waged a relentless public battle against the International Criminal Court (ICC) decision in The Hague to issue arrest warrants against Israeli leadership,' according to Israeli media.
He also took an extremely tough stance toward Iran, adopting strict sanctions against it and repeatedly stating that any future negotiations with Tehran must begin with recognition of Israel's right to exist.

Account Yasser Hassan wrote on Facebook: 'Death of U.S. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham after a sudden health setback, following a political career full of absolute support for Israel and his controversial positions in the Middle East, and his repeated calls to escalate military and economic pressure against Iran.'
