A delegation of Omani diplomats arrived in Tehran for a visit aimed at consulting with Iranian officials on navigation management in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic waterway linking the Persian Gulf to the Sea of Oman.

Iran's official news agency IRNA reported that the discussions focus on reaching an organized mechanism for managing ship traffic in the strait, within the framework of joint cooperation.

No official statement has been issued yet by the Omani side in this regard.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi traveled to Muscat on July 11 and held talks with his Omani counterpart Badr al-Busaidi on a mechanism for managing navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

International media reports at the time said that the Omani side proposed during the visit that Oman oversee ship traffic in the part of the strait within its waters, while Iran would manage navigation in the part within its waters, but Tehran rejected the proposal, according to those reports.

In recent years, attempts to establish a joint mechanism for managing navigation in the strait have been repeated, amid rising tensions due to US sanctions on Tehran. Oman plays a traditional mediating role in the region, making it an acceptable party to all sides. Observers believe that the success of these talks could help ease tensions in the vital waterway, through which a large portion of global oil supplies passes. However, Tehran's rejection of Muscat's previous proposal indicates the complexity of the file.
