The city of Palm Beach, Florida, officially changed the name of its airport on Thursday to Donald J. Trump International Airport, joining a growing list of institutions, facilities, government programs, warships, and currency bearing the name of the Republican president.

The airport renaming is a notable recognition of the support Trump enjoys in Florida, which he has made his home and where his luxury Mar-a-Lago resort is located.

Eric Trump, the president's son, said in an interview with Fox News: "I don't think there's anyone more synonymous with Palm Beach than Donald Trump, probably in all of Florida," according to Reuters.

Since taking office for a second term in the White House last year, Trump's name has been placed on a new class of Navy ships, a visa program for wealthy foreigners, a government drug website, and federal children's savings accounts.

He has also sought to ambitiously reshape Washington, and while Trump's name was added to the U.S. Institute of Peace building, courts rejected an attempt to place his name on the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican, signed legislation last March to change the name of the airport in the southeastern Florida city to Trump Airport.

The airport explained that its three-letter identifier used by the Federal Aviation Administration changed on Thursday from "PBI" to "DJT".

It added on its website that travelers will have to continue using the old code "PBI" for flights until August 18, until the new code is included in baggage tags, tickets, and airline reservation systems, and noted that the cost of the name change was $5.5 million.
